Garage Door Installation: How It Works
What actually happens on installation day, the clearances required, how long it takes and what you need to prepare. From a team that has been installing doors since 1978.
Having a garage door installed is not simply “hanging a door”. It is a spring-loaded assembly that must be balanced to the exact weight of your door, with precise clearances around the opening. Here is how it really goes, from the first call to the final test.
The steps of a professional installation
- Measurements — we measure the opening, the headroom between the opening and the ceiling, the side clearances and the garage depth. This determines the hardware type and which models are possible.
- Choosing the door — model, insulation level, colour, windows, hardware. We advise based on use: attached and heated garage, detached garage, workshop, commercial building.
- Order and manufacturing — Garaga doors are made in Quebec to your exact dimensions.
- Installation day — removal of the old door, mounting of tracks and brackets, section-by-section assembly, torsion shaft and springs, cables, weatherseals, then the opener hookup if there is one.
- Balancing and testing — the step nobody sees and that makes all the difference: the door must hold in place at mid-height, travel without straining, and the opener safeties (reversal, photo eyes) must be tested.
How long it takes
For a standard residential replacement, expect a day or less: our technicians remove the old door, install the new one and adjust everything in the same visit. New construction, an oversized door or a high-lift configuration can take longer.
Opening and clearances required
The rough opening matches the door size: a 9 x 7 ft door goes into a 9 x 7 ft opening. It is the clearances around it that determine what is feasible.

Springs: the part you do not do yourself
Torsion springs store the energy needed to lift a door that often weighs over 200 pounds. They are under enormous tension and are calibrated to your door’s precise weight. It is one of the most dangerous repairs for a DIYer and a cause of serious injuries every year.
For reference, a torsion spring is designed for roughly 10,000 to 15,000 open-close cycles, or 7 to 10 years of typical use. See the signs of a broken spring.
What to prepare before our visit
- Clear about 3 feet inside the garage in front of the opening and along the side walls;
- Provide truck access (cleared of snow in winter);
- If an opener is being installed: a ceiling outlet near the centre of the door;
- Tell us about anything unusual — finished ceiling, light fixture, plumbing or overhead storage near the opening.
What about the opener?
Opener installation is usually done in the same visit. Depending on your garage, we install a ceiling model (belt drive for quiet, chain drive for value) or a wall-mount model that frees the ceiling completely.
Frequently asked questions
Can I install my garage door myself?
Assembling the sections is within reach of a skilled DIYer, but mounting the torsion springs and the final balancing are not: the tension involved is dangerous and the calibration must match the door’s exact weight. A poorly balanced door wears out the opener prematurely and becomes a safety risk.
What opening do I need for a garage door?
The rough opening matches the door’s nominal size. What matters most is the headroom above the opening: 12 in. for a standard lift, 14 in. with an electric opener, and low-headroom hardware exists for 5 to 12 in.
How long does installation take?
A standard residential replacement is done in a day or less, including removal of the old door, installation, balancing and safety testing.
Do I need to remove the old door before you arrive?
No, our technicians handle it and take the old door away. You only need to clear the work space inside the garage.
Do you install doors purchased elsewhere?
We install the doors we supply, which lets us warranty the whole system — door, hardware, springs and installation. Installing an opener on an existing door in good condition is a different matter and is no problem.
