What we repair
Springs
Torsion springs above the door, or extension springs, one on each side above the tracks. This is the part that fails most often, and the most dangerous to handle yourself.
Lift cables
A frayed cable, or one that has come off its cable drum, makes the door hang crooked. Deal with it immediately: a crooked door damages its tracks.
Rollers and hinges
A noisy door, or one that binds, almost always comes down to worn rollers or tired hinges. Inexpensive parts, a big difference in comfort.
Panels
A panel dented by a bumper can often be replaced on its own, without changing the whole door, as long as the model is still available.
Tracks and bottom brackets
Bent, misaligned or off-centre tracks. This is also what makes one door last twenty years while another fails after two.
Openers
Motor, gear, door arm, remotes, and the photoelectric safety reversing system that stops the door from closing on an obstacle.
The breakdowns we see most often
The door will not go up and the motor strains
Nine times out of ten, it is a broken spring. You often hear it happen: a sharp bang in the garage, like a gunshot. The door then becomes extremely heavy, because it is the springs, not the motor, that carry the weight of the door. What to do when a spring breaks.
Do not try to force it with the opener. You will burn out the opener’s gear and add a second bill to the first.
The door slides back down on its own
That is a balance problem. A properly adjusted door stays put when you stop it halfway with the opener disconnected. If it falls, the springs have lost tension or no longer match the weight of the door.
The door reverses as soon as it touches the floor
The photoelectric safety reversing system is misaligned or dirty, or the opener’s travel limits are off. This is a mandatory safety device: we adjust it, we never bypass it.
The door is noisy
Worn rollers, loose hardware, lack of lubrication. A maintenance visit usually solves it for a fraction of the cost of a major repair.
Cold air comes in around the edges
The bottom weatherstripping is split, or the perimeter weatherstripping has hardened. Two inexpensive parts that change the comfort of an attached or heated garage.
Repair or replace?
We will tell you straight, even when the answer is “repair it”.
Repair makes sense when the door is under fifteen years old, the panels are sound, and the problem is a moving part: spring, cable, rollers, motor. Those parts are meant to be replaced.
Replacement becomes the logical call when several panels are damaged or rusted, when the door is not insulated but the garage is heated, or when repairs pile up year after year. Replacing three panels often costs nearly as much as a new door. See garage door replacement.
Where our technicians go
Our trucks leave from our shop at 290 Rodolphe-Besner in Vaudreuil-Dorion. We cover:
West Island and Greater Montreal: Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue, Beaconsfield, Kirkland, Pointe-Claire, Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Dorval, Pierrefonds, Senneville, Lachine, LaSalle, Montreal and Laval.
We do not serve the Laurentians, Lanaudière or the eastern Montérégie. If you are outside our area, tell us anyway: we will point you to someone rather than leave you without an answer.
Frequently asked questions
Do you repair doors you did not install?
Yes, and it is a good part of our work. Our technicians repair doors and openers from most brands on the market, no matter who did the original installation.
How soon can a technician come?
For a door completely stuck in our area, we try to come the same day or the next. For scheduled maintenance or a non-urgent repair, we book a time that suits you.
One spring is broken. Should I replace both?
On a two-spring system, yes, we strongly recommend replacing both. They are the same age with the same number of cycles: when the first one fails, the second usually follows soon after. Doing both in one visit costs less than two service calls.
Can I change a spring myself?
No, and that is not a sales line. A garage door spring stores enough energy to cause serious injury. It takes the right tools and knowing how to release the tension before touching anything.
How much does a repair cost?
It depends on the part and the model. We do not publish rates because a number without a diagnosis means nothing. Call us, describe the symptom, and we will give you a ballpark before coming out.
Do you also handle commercial work?
Yes: sectional doors, high-speed doors, rolling doors, loading docks, and fire-rated doors with their annual drop test.
A door that no longer works?
Describe the symptom. We will tell you what it is, what it involves, and when we can come.
