Noisy Garage Door: the 6 Most Frequent Causes

A garage door is not supposed to wake up the household. If yours rumbles, squeaks or bangs, here are the six causes we see most often in service — from the simplest to the most serious.

1. Lack of lubrication

Cause No. 1, and the easiest to fix: dry hinges, rollers and tracks. A silicone lubricant (no thick grease that stiffens in the cold), twice a year, works wonders.

2. Worn rollers

Aging steel rollers rumble in the tracks. Replacing them with nylon ball-bearing rollers literally transforms a door’s sound — one of the most rewarding upgrades there is.

3. Loose hardware

Hundreds of openings eventually loosen bolts and brackets, which start to rattle. A complete re-tightening is part of any annual tune-up worthy of the name.

4. An unbalanced door

If the springs no longer exactly offset the door’s weight, the whole system strains and the noise grows. Simple test: door at mid-height, it should stay put. If it falls or rises, the balance needs adjusting — by a technician (springs are under high tension).

5. The opener itself
