But what does that mean concretely, and how do you know which rating you need? A short guide for managers, contractors and architects.

The door’s rating follows the wall’s rating

The basic principle: the door protects an opening cut into a fire separation. The building code sets the wall’s required resistance based on its use (party wall, exit, mechanical room, parking garage…), and the door’s rating follows from it. As a general rule, openings in a rated wall require protection from ¾ h to 3 h, and listed doors go up to 4 h.

Common ratings for rolling doors

¾ hour: light separations, some corridors;

1½ hours: a very common case — notably openings in 2-h rated drywall, where allowed dimensions are also limited;

3 hours: masonry walls requiring high protection (party walls, major separations);

4 hours: the maximum offered on several rolling steel doors (depending on mounting).

Important: the achievable rating depends on the wall type and mounting — the same door does not deliver the same rating on masonry, steel or rated drywall. The UL/ULC listings spell all of this out.

Fire… and smoke

Some openings also require smoke control (“S” label, UL 1784 standard). Models like the Cornell ERD11 with SmokeShield add gaskets that block smoke migration in addition to flames.

And after installation?

A fire door must be inspected and drop-tested every year per NFPA 80 — otherwise the protection is only theoretical.

We handle compliance

Send us the spec section or the wall type: we recommend the listed door that fits, install it and test it. See our fire-rated line or request a quote.

¾ h, 1½ h, 3 h, 4 h: understanding rolling door fire-resistance ratings, and how the wall type determines the achievable rating.

[19

post-9914","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-blog
["GET
